Meet the Teacher: Nick Chater

Welcome to Meet the Teacher – CodeMonkey’s blog segment where teachers from all over the world share their experiences on what it’s like being an educator. Today’s post features Nick Chater, former teacher and Ed-Tech entrepreneur from Birmingham, UK.

“I didn’t decide to be a teacher, my mother-in-law did! She got fed up with me hanging around the house after my business failed. I didn’t think it was a good idea, but when I took the dust cover off the BBC Micro computer in the classroom, I suddenly got a swarm of kids queuing up to see what I was doing! This confirmed my belief that children deserved better. However, I don’t really like teaching, I am a real facilitator, a ‘learning architect’ one who enjoys setting up exciting learning facilities.

Hopefully education in the future will not be as it is today. The internet and especially the social applications have provided learners with a vast network of experts, on tap, when they need them, we just have to work hard to find them! School has become irrelevant and indeed can get in the way of learning, school is for people that want to be schooled, but not for the people that want to learn and develop the connections in their knowledge and understanding so that they can create a better future for themselves and their communities.

I fell on twitter ages ago and for a long time I didn’t get the point of it, so many celebrities telling me what they have done and what they are going to do did not appeal to me, until I found out that there were many, many educators of like mind, then my network just grew and I have not looked back since”.
