A mother of 3 children in elementary school, Keren understands the importance of a Computer Science education from an early age. She has seen firsthand that the best way for children to retain knowledge is to have fun while learning! Keren works as Head of Creative Marketing at CodeMonkey.
Ada Lovelace – World’s First Computer Programmer
Imagination is the key to endless possibilities. Not only was Ada Lovelace the first programmer, but she was the first person to see the real potential of computers! She developed the first algorithm by translating and adding crucial notes on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine.
Ada’s childhood showed promise for her future as a brilliant mathematician and writer. Born in London, England to Lord and Lady Byron, she had a thirst for learning and creation early on. She conceptualized a flying machine at just the age 12. Lord Byron was a famous poet and eccentric character, so it’s no surprise that she regarded “Poetical Science” as her driving force for innovation. Her mother tried desperately to influence her into more serious studies, but Ada instead merged art and science together. Her genius lies in questioning basic assumptions in math and science. She fused her love of science and art together, pushing the boundaries of what could exist.
Ada was introduced to Charles Babbage by author Mary Somerville, who was a mutual friend. She was only 17 at the time. Babbage immediately saw her potential and became Ada’s mentor. He supported her journey to success all the way.
Ada was privately educated by tutors, but in her advanced studies she was helped by Augustus De Morgan, the first professor of mathematics at the University of London. She became interested in Babbage’s machines in 1833, but it was almost ten years later, when she translated and annotated an article written by the Italian mathematician and engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea (1842; “Elements of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Machine”), and the rest is history.
Babbage may have built only a fraction of the Analytical Engine, but it’s Lovelace’s vision that continues to shine. Her legacy lives on in the programming language Ada, named in her honor, and every year on the second Tuesday of October, Ada Lovelace Day celebrates the brilliance of women driving progress in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Unlike many of the analytical minds of her time, she looked beyond mathematical equations. Ada envisioned new ideas far beyond base calculations. That’s why she can be considered as the first computer programmer in the world.
“Understand well as I may, my comprehension can only be an infinitesimal fraction of all I want to understand.”
The world of high-tech can thank Ada Lovelace for her important contribution to scientific computing. There is an important lesson to be learned. It is not only important to learn the fundamentals of education but to truly innovate, one must have a fearless imagination and the will to create.
“Imagination is the Discovering Faculty, pre-eminently. It is that which penetrates into the unseen worlds around us, the worlds of Science.”
